www.pwrgym.org

VISION. A community where all people with Parkinson disease receive research-based exercise beginning at diagnosis with access for life to increase longevity and quality of life such that end stage PD is eradicated!

MISSION. To develop and expand access to an international network (PWR! NetWorks) of Parkinson disease exercise experts (PWR! Experts) and community-based PWR!GYM™ centers that provide early intervention and continuous access to research-based exercise approaches that target the unique physical, emotional, and cognitive challenges for individuals living with PD.

PWR!GYM™ NeuroFitness Center - Tucson, AZ

AN EXERCISE AND ENRICHMENT CENTER FOR PEOPLE WITH PARKINSON DISEASE!

The PWR! Project was started in 2009 by Dr. Becky Farley, a researcher, LSVT® BIG developer, physical therapist, neuroscientist, and Parkinson’s exercise specialist to address the unmet needs in standard of care rehabilitation delivery models for individuals with Parkinson disease (PD).   The first model neurofitness center was designed to offer early intervention and continuous access to research-based exercise programs to the Parkinson community in Tucson, AZ.  In 2010, Becky went on to found NeuroFit NetWorks (www.nfnw.org) to allow for revenue generation through grants and donation to help subsidize the costs of programming for the local Tucson neurofitness center and to enhance the growth of neurofitness centers and programming to medical professionals as well as the community across the nation.  There are three primary activities associated with the PWR! Project that address medical, community health and fitness professionals; individuals and their family/friends/caregivers. The purpose of all of our efforts and programming is to coordinate and integrate medical healthcare systems with community-based programs and resources for early intervention and continuous access to research-based exercise programs. In the future we hope to expand programming for other types of neurodegenerative or neurological disorders.

Medtronic provided a grant to kickstart the Train the Trainer program. We have completed a rehabilitation-focused and a fitness-focused training program in Phoenix. We will be developing more continuing education materials (DVD’s/manuals) and pursuing approval for continuing education credits from several health and fitness cerification associations.
